The frost is on the fence posts, the dogs are curled up by the heater, and your little one is eyeing off the back door. Winter on the land is beautiful, but it takes the right layers to keep active country kids warm, comfortable, and ready for whatever the day brings.
As a mum of four raising kids on a beef cattle station in the Upper Hunter Valley, I know how quickly a morning can go from brisk to blowing. Here is how I dress our kids for Australian winter, country style.
1. Start Smart: The Country Base Layer
Layering is the number one trick for unpredictable winter weather. A well-fitting long-sleeved shirt in breathable cotton is your best friend. Our long-sleeve western-style shirts are made for movement, tailored enough for school photos and rugged enough for the yards.
- Choose breathable fabrics over synthetic fleece
- Fitted (not baggy) so they do not bunch under layers
- A western-cut shirt doubles as a base layer on cool days
2. The Mid Layer: Lock In the Warmth
Country kids need warmth without restriction. This winter colour palette is all about earthy tones: camel, chocolate brown, deep forest green, and rusty red. They sit beautifully against the winter landscape and hide a lot of red dirt.
- Polo shirts, smart enough for school, tough enough for the weekend
- Long-sleeve western shirts with snap buttons and classic collar details
- Cinch White Label Jeans, adjustable waist and slim fit, built for real kids who move
3. Top It Off: Hats and Beanies
A country kid without a hat is not fully dressed, even in winter. Cold winds on the station can be biting in the early mornings. A good beanie or broad-brim hat keeps ears warm and shields small faces from wind chill. For toddlers, look for hats with chin straps.
4. The Full Winter Outfit
For Boys: singlet base, LWCC long-sleeve western shirt, Cinch jeans, Roper boots, broad-brim or beanie hat.
For Girls: cotton base, LWCC country shirt or polo, dark denim, Roper boots, wide-brim hat.
For Babies and Toddlers: LWCC western romper over a long-sleeve onesie, merino socks, soft-soled boots, beanie. Zips and snap buttons are your best friends at 6am.
