The Little Windmill Winter Layering Guide: Dressing Kids for Cold Mornings on the Land
Anyone who's tried to get three kids out the door before a 6am start knows — on the land, the weather doesn't wait for you to find matching socks. The frost's still on the yard, the diesel heater's working overtime, and somehow someone's already got mud on their gumboots before breakfast.
We get asked all the time how we dress our own kids for a cold snap, so we thought we'd share it. Consider this our family's tried-and-tested winter layering system — built from years of horse events, weekend sports and everything in between.

The 3-layer rule (that actually works)
You don't need a wardrobe overhaul for winter — you need three layers that do their job and come off easily when the sun gets going by 10am.
-
Base layer: soft, breathable cotton against the skin — no scratchy fabrics, nothing that traps a wriggly toddler mid-tantrum. This is where our waffle cotton onesies earn their keep for the little ones and long sleeve tees, are ideal from babies - teens.
-
Mid layer: the warmth. A extra layer llike a long sleeve polo, soft jersey's or hoodies for extra warmth, that holds heat without the bulk — All of these styles or combined, are the layers that get worn all day, every day, until spring.
-
Outer layer: caps, beanies and a windproof jacket for the actual outdoor stretches — horse events, sports on the weekends, or everyday jobs.
Add one more layer than you think you need. Kids run hot once they're moving, but they're grateful for it in the first ten minutes.

Shop the edit: this week's cold-morning heroes
A few new arrivals (and one very-nearly-sold-out favourite) that have been living in high rotation on our own kids this week:
Thick, soft fleece with lightweight warmth that suits everything from crisp mornings to campfire nights. This one's a genuine best-seller and it's a limited release, so once your size is gone, it's gone.
New this month — three trucker caps that go from the ute to the school gate. Practical, cute, and sized so the whole family can match if you're that way inclined (we are).
For the smallest members of the family — soft waffle cotton with a matching beanie, exclusive Little Windmill prints, and enough warmth for a cold nursery without overheating.
Toasty, exclusive-printed knit blankets for the pram or the bassinet — a favourite baby shower gift for a reason.
✦
Match the family
If you're going to layer up, you may as well do it together. Our women's, boys' and girls' polo bundles and the new cap range are sized right across the family — so cousin, sibling and mum can all show up in the same print on show day, footy day, or just because.
